In a TEDxBoston talk, Thorne explored the growing body of science behind the Mouth-Body Connection® and explained why the future of healthcare depends on identifying disease earlier, strengthening collaboration between dental and medical clinicians and using new technologies to improve patient care.

“Saliva science has exploded in recent years and it is now irrefutable,” Thorne said. “Our mouths are a gateway to so many of the chronic inflammatory diseases.”

During the talk, Thorne explained that inflammation is the body's natural response to infection or injury, but when harmful bacteria persist, chronic inflammation can develop and contribute to serious health problems. He emphasized that oral disease often begins with harmful bacteria that accumulate in the mouth over time. Left unchecked, those bacteria don't stay in the mouth. They can travel throughout the body, contributing to chronic inflammation that has been associated with a range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung disease and certain cancers.

This understanding is at the heart of the Mouth-Body Connection® and reinforces why maintaining good oral health is essential to overall health.

Why Saliva Science Matters

As research continues to advance, saliva is becoming an increasingly valuable source of health information. Scientists can now measure biomarkers in saliva that were previously difficult or impossible to detect outside of traditional laboratory testing, creating new opportunities for earlier identification of disease.

“Many are saying saliva is the new blood,” Thorne said. “Saliva can tell us so much now about our overall health. It's like a dashboard and we can now get health markers in our saliva that we couldn't get before.”

Thorne also highlighted emerging research examining connections between oral bacteria and diseases including pancreatic cancer, Parkinson's disease and other chronic inflammatory conditions. While research continues to evolve, these findings reinforce the growing role saliva science may play in supporting earlier detection and more personalized care.

Advancing Earlier Detection Through Dental-Medical Integration

The ability to identify earlier signals of disease is only valuable if patients can be connected to the care they need. That's where dental-medical integration plays an important role.

Thorne explained that dentists are uniquely positioned to identify changes in a patient's health during routine visits. When combined with chairside saliva screenings and diagnostics, clinical judgment and timely collaboration with primary care providers, those insights can support earlier intervention and more connected care.

"Today, saliva science allows us to measure microbial imbalance and inflammatory burden earlier and more precisely than ever before," Thorne said. "This is not an adjunct to care. It is central to prevention strategy."
