Routine dental appointments can reveal more than cavities and gum disease. They can uncover signs of serious health conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed.

For one patient at a PDS Health-supported dental practice in Oregon, a routine periodontal appointment and a simple blood pressure screening led to the discovery of multiple serious medical conditions, demonstrating how dental professionals can play an important role in identifying health concerns beyond the mouth and connect patients with the care they need.

A Routine Visit Raises Concern

In January 2024, Registered Dental Hygienist Jennifer Foreman was preparing a patient, William, for scaling and root planing, a common treatment for periodontal disease. As part of the practice's comprehensive approach to patient care, Jennifer completed a routine blood pressure screening before treatment.

The reading was 182/116, a level high enough to raise immediate concern.

William was surprised. He said he had no history of high blood pressure.

To ensure the reading was accurate, Jennifer repeated the assessment using both a wrist cuff and manual techniques. The results remained consistently elevated.

Based on the elevated readings and her clinical judgment, Jennifer determined it was not appropriate to proceed with treatment requiring local anesthetic. She encouraged William to contact his primary care provider as soon as possible and explained why the elevated reading warranted immediate medical follow-up. She also discussed the Mouth-Body Connection®, explaining that oral health and overall health are closely linked and that periodontal disease has been associated with chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease. The conversation reinforced the importance of seeking timely medical evaluation and caring for both oral health and overall health.

“You Saved My Life”

Nearly a year later, William returned for a comprehensive dental exam. As Jennifer walked by, William stopped her.

“Are you the hygienist who referred me to see a doctor last year?”

When she said yes, he looked at her and replied:

“You saved my life.”

William explained that following Jennifer’s recommendation, his physician diagnosed previously undetected hypertension, heart disease and sleep apnea. He was later hospitalized and learned that what he believed were panic attacks had actually been symptoms of serious medical conditions.

What began as a routine blood pressure screening during a dental visit became the first step toward identifying serious underlying health conditions and getting the medical care he needed.

Today, William is committed to improving both his oral health and his overall health. He has resumed periodontal treatment and better understands the relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular health.

Why Standardized Screenings Matter

William's story illustrates the science behind the Mouth-Body Connection®, the well-established relationship between oral health and overall health. That science underscores the importance of dental-medical integration, where routine health screenings, timely referrals and collaboration between dental and medical clinicians help support earlier diagnosis and more connected care.

Routine screenings, such as blood pressure assessments, can provide valuable insights that extend beyond oral health and help identify patients who may need further medical evaluation. When combined with clinical judgment and strong collaboration across disciplines, these assessments have the potential to change the trajectory of a patient's health. William's experience is a powerful reminder that a routine dental visit can be the beginning of a life-changing healthcare journey.
